Sometimes They Come Back... For More (1998)

Sometimes They Come Back... For More (1998)

So there is a trend in low-budget b-horror films, to take a name of a film that was either successful or popular, and then to make "sequels" that really have nothing to do with the original film.  Some great examples of this would be the endless sequels to Stephen King's Children Of The Corn, the sequels to the film Troll, and 1998's Sometimes They Come Back... For More, which has nothing to do with, or even in common with the 1991 television film adaptation of Stephen King's short story, Sometimes They Come Back.   There is one tiny mention of the character Jim Norman, when his name is on a map in Dr. Schilling's room, but they name him as being from Bangor Maine, which is an inconsistency with the 1991 film, as well as the Stephen King's short story. Sometimes They Come Back... For More is not so much a sequel of Sometimes They Come Back, as it is a rip-off/knock off of John Carpenter's The Thing.   The story is about a research center in Antarctica where one of the doctors has gone mad and starts murdering other members of the center.  So Captain Sam Cage, and Major Callie O'Grady are sent to investigate and rescue the survivors.   But when they get there there are two survivors, Dr. Jennifer Wells and communications Lieutenant Brian Shepanski, and as they investigate things take a much darker turn.

Sometimes They Come Back...For More was directed by Daniel Zelik Berk, with a screenplay by Adam Grossman and Darrell Sollerh.  Though the film is marketed as based on characters by Stephen King, I feel like they slapped his name on just to sell the film, because there really is no connection to King's characters from the short story or from Sometimes They Come Back.  Really the title of the film is mislead.   However, I have watched this film before, and it was mislabeled on a streaming site as The Thing remake, and the film does actually have two other official titles, Frozen, and Ice Station Erebus.  The film was released direct to DVD and distributed by Trimark Pictures in 1998.

Sometimes They Come Back... For More stars Clayton Rohner as Captain Sam Cage, Chase Masterson plays Major Callie O'Grady, Faith Ford as Dr. Jennifer Wells, Max Perlich as Lieutenant Brian Sebanski, and Damian Chapa as Dr. Karl Schilling.  So, not only is this film a ripoff of The Thing, but Clayton Rohner as Captain Sam Cage even looks slightly like Kurt Russell.  I think the only actor who was even halfway decent in the film is Max Perlich, who I became a fan of after seeing him in Gleaming The Cube in the 1980s.  For the most part the cast in the film are mediocre at best, and they are working with an obviously poorly written script as well as what seems like some poor direction.  I don't know if it is so much the cast that is to blame, or if it is just the bad writing and directing to blame.

Overall the film is mediocre at best, it has nothing in common with Stephen King's Sometimes They Come Back, and is little more than just a rip-off of John Carpenter's The Thing.  It really isn't a film worth watching, when you could instead go watch The Thing.  The plot of the film is a sad attempt at trying to be dark and sinister, it just comes off as poorly executed and unconvincing.   So if you come across a copy of this film, give it a pass, it really isn't worth the 86 minutes that you will spend watching it.   Also the deceiving promise that it is based on characters created by Stephen King, just disappoints me even more, this film should just be avoided.
