A Quiet Place 2 (2021)

A Quiet Place 2 (2021)

in 2018, I watched A Quiet Place in the theater with my best friend, and I was really impressed, it was one of the best modern horror films that I have seen.  So, I have been anxiously awaiting the release of the sequel, and in March of 2020, I was going to see it, but the release date got postponed because of the Covid-19 Pandemic, which closed down cinemas throughout the country.  So now that the cinemas are reopening, my wait to see A Quiet Place Part 2 finally came to an end!   The wait was totally worth it, this is a must see film that should not be passed up, and deserves to be seen in the cinema on the big screen.

A Quiet Place Part 2 was written, directed, starred in, and co-produced by John Krasinski.  The other producers of the film featured big names like Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller.  The film was distributed by Paramount Pictures, and premiered in New York City on March 8 2020, but due to the Covid-19 Pandemic did not see a full theatrical release until May 28th 2021.  The film had a budget of $61 million, and as of June 3rd, has already surpassed that in box office sales, making it already a successful film within it's first week of being released.   The film has also been receiving generally positive reviews from the critics, and to that I would add that this is a must-see film, and among the best modern horror films to be released in the last decade.  With a great cast, and John Krasinski shows himself to be so much more than his character that most people seem to know him from on the US version of The Office, he shows that he has skill as a serious actor, and as a director, and if he fails to win any academy awards for his amazing work on this film, that would be a shame.

A Quiet Place 2 stars John Krasinski reprising his role as Lee Abbot in a flashback sequence at the beginning of the film, Krasinski's real life wife Emily Blunt also reprises her role as his onscreen wife Evelyn Abbott,  Millicent Simmonds also reprises her role as their daughter Regan Abbot, Noah Jupe reprises his role as her brother Marcus Abbott, Cillian Murphy joins the cast in this film as Emmett who is an old friend of Lee and the Abbot family,  and Djimon Hounsou plays the Man On The Island who is the leader of a small colony of survivors.  Part of what made the first film work so well, were the amazing characters, and the talented actors who played those characters, which is even more so true of this film.  I have to say that Millicent Simmonds is an amazing young actress who in this film proves herself to be an amazing leading lady.  Honestly she is a part of this young group of up and coming actors, that make me excited for the future of cinema, like the young stars of Stranger Things, these young actors are proving that they are very talented, and exciting to watch.  If you are a director and you do not put Millicent Simmonds in your film, then you are missing out on one of the best young actresses in the industry.   Also it is refreshing to again see a non-hearing person play the role of a non-hearing person, rather than have someone pretend that they are non-hearing, but her character is also not a "token" character either, she is important, she is really the star of the film, and it is her that the story in the film really centers around, though of course the rest of her family, and the newcomer to the franchise Cillian Murphy are important, but this film above all is Regan's story, and the big part that she has to play in the continuing franchise of A Quiet Place, and hopefully this won't be the last time we see these amazing characters on the big screen.   All of the actors in the film were great, and perfectly cast, and well written characters.  A nearly perfect cast!

A Quiet Place 2 was filmed in and around the Buffalo NY area, which is an area that I am very much in love with, and an area that I am quite familiar with, so it was fun for me to see areas that I recognized while watching the film.  I also like how this film on one hands tells the back story of what led to the events of the previous film, while also taking the film's story in a new direction as the family leaves the farm after the end of the previous film, and tries to find a new home for themselves.   So instead of being the home-bound survival film of the first film, this film takes the survival on the road, and the skill of how to defeat the monsters discovered in the first film, gets further explored, and plays a big role in this second film of the franchise.   Not only is this film well written, well directed, and has a nearly perfect cast, it also looks really really good.  The effects are beautifully done, I like the subdued colour pallet of the film as well, which helps the viewer feel the tone of the film.  This is a film that excels in pretty much every area that a film can excel in.   IF I were to have one complaint, that would be more on the part of the cinemas, rather than on the film itself, since the film's nature requires any verbal dialogue to be whispered, it leads to having a hard time catching all of the dialogue, and I really wish that the whole film could be subtitled.  I think by subtitling the whole film, and not just the ASL dialogues, would make the film much more accessible to both the hearing and the non-hearing, and would make the film more enjoyable because the viewer wouldn't have to strain to try to not miss important lines of dialogue, and really that is the only complaint that I had of this film, other than that it is a nearly perfect film.

So if you are fully vaccinated now, and are comfortable returning to your local cinema to see films on the big screen again, I highly highly recommend checking out A Quiet Place 2.   This is definitely a must-see film, and in my not so humble opinion is already a contender for one of the best films of the year.  So get back out there and support your local cinema, and watch this amazing film.  I can guarantee that when this is released on DVD I will be adding it to my collection, and film collection would be incomplete without both A Quiet Place Part 1 and 2.   So if you have not yet seen this film, do yourself a favour and go see it right away.
