Boogiepop And Others (2000)

Boogiepop And Others (2000)

I love live action anime films, and Japanese films in general, there is just something about them that really appeals to me about them.  Boogiepop And Others, released in 2000, was supposed to serve to get viewers excited and interested in the anime series Boogiepop Phantom, however because of being held up production, the film ended up being released when the anime series had almost finished airing.   Boogiepop And Others serves as a prequel to the anime series Boogiepop Phantom, and is based on the light novel of the same name, which was the first volume of the Boogiepop series.  The film involves multiple characters, with their own storylines and story arcs, but the characters and the events in which they experience overlap with each other and they all tie in to create a larger overarching storyline, that at its heart is about shinigami Boogiepop who is hunting the Manticore.  This film helps to explain who Echoes is, and about the pillar of light, that was mentioned in the anime series Boogiepop Phantom, so if you enjoyed that amazing anime series, then this film will help to explain the "events from five years ago" that they reference throughout the series, because this film IS the events that happened five years ago, with the missing highschool girls, and the strange pillar of light, and concerns the character of Echoes.

Boogiepop And Others was directed by Ryu Kaneda with a story by Sadayuki Murai based on the novel of the same name by Kouhei Kadono.   This film was produced by Hakuhodo and Toei Video Company in 2000, and distributed internationally by The Right Stuff International in 2004.  Outside of fans of the Boogiepop series this is a film that most people are probably not familiar with, and on IMDb it holds just an average rating.

Boogiepop And Others stars Sayaka Yoshino as Toka Miyashita/Boogiepop, Mara Jurosu as Nagi Kirima, Daijiro Kawaoka as Keiji Takeda, Ayana Sakai as Minako Yurihara/Manticore, Asumi Miwa as Naoko Kamikishiro, Mami Shimizu as Kazuko Suema, Kai Hirohashi as Kei Shinkoku, Tetsu Sawaki as Akiko Kimura, Hassei Takano as Saotome Masami, Hideyuki Kasahara as Shiro Tanakoa, and Yasufumi Terawaki as Echoes.  The film has a fantastic and talented cast of performers.  The amazing talent of the actors is part of why I love Japanese films so much, they feel like low budget films, for obvious reasons, since they don't have the large budget of big Hollywood studios to back them up, but I think that makes the film have more appearance, and I feel that many times the lower production values, help to show just how great the actors really are.  The actors just feel so perfectly chosen for the characters that they play in the film.

First off, this is not a film that will appeal to many Western viewers, who expect everything to be a big Hollywood production, or they just aren't impressed, and I think that is very very sad.  This is a film that will mostly appeal to fans of the Boogiepop Phantom anime series, and fans of life-action anime films, and low budget Japanese supernatural horror/psychological thriller films.  So basically this film is created for people like me.  I loved this film, I loved the look and tone of the film, I loved how gory it is (not quite as gory as a Tokyo Shock production, but still a nice amount), and I loved the effects.  Most of all I loved the complex story, and the fantastic writing that makes this film so great, and of course the fantastic actors who brought the characters to life so well.  I would not say that Boogiepop And Others is a must see film, and that it definitely appeals most to a niche audience.  So if you enjoyed the Boogiepop Phantom anime series, or the Boogiepop light novel or manga series, then this is a must see.  That being said I really do highly recommend checking it out, this is a beautiful film.
