Adventures in Southern Maine

Adventures In Southern Maine

I've been feeling really depressed recently, maybe it is just that winter has started to get to me, and I am getting a bit of cabin fever going on, but I decided today that I really just needed to get out and go for a drive, I mean sure why not, there was snow forcasted for the day, and I love driving in snow, and I just wanted to get out and explore a bit.   So I just picked a direction and away I went.

The first location that I stumbled upon purely by accident was in North Berwick Maine, found the mill that was used as the Shoe Factory in the 1995 film Jumanji.  The building was instantly recognizable when I drove past it, so I had to stop and get a photo to share with you all.

My next stop was a nice walk on the beach in a high wind and snow at the Ogunquit Beach in Ogunquit Maine.  Ogunquit has been in a few films including being the home of Frannie played by Molly Ringwald in Stephen King's The Stand miniseries.   It was honestly really peaceful taking a stroll on the mostly empty beach today, there were a few people out with their dogs, and one lady introduced me to her sweet dog, but I don't take pictures of people or their pets without asking first, so no puppy pictures in this post.  The ocean was beautiful today.

My next stop was Perkin's Cove, which is a cute little area along the coast of Ogunquit, where there are some cute shops and restaurants.  I was more interested in the beauty of the cove, and the sea, than I was in the shops and stuff though.  It is so nice getting to explore this area, without it being flooded with tourists, as it is all summer.  I honestly try to avoid many of the coastal towns in southern Maine in the summer, because of all of the tourists.   I love Maine in the winter, it is such a beautiful and peaceful place.  Especially today with a storm coming in, and high winds, snow, and rain coming in from the south.
The next stop on my adventure, is the Nubble Lighthouse in Cape Neddick Maine.   The wind was so strong that it almost blew me off my feet as I took a walk and snapped these beautiful shots of the picturesque Nubble Lighthouse.  This cute lighthouse is on a small island just off the tip of Cape Neddick.  There is another lighthouse not too far off the coast here as well, which I haven't seen, and not sure if you can see it from land, it is Boon Island Lighthouse.  These lighthouses keep ships from hitting the rocks off the coast of Maine, though there are a lot more lighthouses in the Mid and Downeast Coasts of Maine, as the shoreline begins to shift from the smoother lines of southern Maine to the intricate web of islands and peninsulas starting at the Casco Bay around Portland, and extending to the Canadian border at Lubec and Eastport Maine.   The photos today were at low tide which you can tell by looking at the dark water lines on the rocks.  The camera couldn't capture it, but the the waves were pretty intense as they slammed against the rocks of the shore.  It was such a beautiful day to be out exploring the coast, I love the power and beauty of the Atlantic Ocean in the winter.

The last stop on this little adventure was in Kennebunkport Maine.   This photo shows a view of Walker Point, from Blowing Cave Park, looking across Sandy Cove.  Walker Point is home to one of the biggest Billionaire assholes who has a summer home in Maine, the former President Bush family.  This is the Bush family compound.   After this brief stop I also drove up to Cape Porpoise and saw a beautiful view of the Goat Island Lighthouse, but I didn't get a photo there, because I was on a phone call with a friend while I was in Cape Porpoise.  And from there I drove up past the Fortune Rocks Beach, through Biddeford and Saco, onwards up through Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough, South Portland, and then as it was getting dark I began my drive home to our cozy cabin in the woods.   It was a beautiful day, and I found this sense of clarity and happiness that I needed.  Sometimes what we really need in life is a beautiful drive to remind us of how much beauty and magic there is in the world all around us.   I hope you enjoyed some photos from my winter drive through southern Maine today.
